The researchers noted that eating less or more food leads to an increase in some cardiometabolic risk factors in older adults.

The importance of food quality

Food quality is also important, as low quality causes a potential increase in several measures of heart and metabolic risk, according to "Medical News Today".

The study was conducted at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Spain using data from a trial that included 383 individuals between the ages of 55 and 75.

They were all overweight or obese, and had at least 3 signs of metabolic syndrome, and were followed for 3 years.

Ideal energy for the heart

At the end of the study, those who ate less than 20% or more than 30% of their daily calories at breakfast had a greater increase in weight and waist circumference than those who got the recommended amount.

They also had significantly higher levels of triglycerides and lower levels of good cholesterol than those who consumed 20-30% of their energy at the start of the day.
