Dried Yogurt: A Novelty Snack or a Nutritional Risk?

Dried yogurt is the latest food trend on TikTok, and its popularity is already growing. The method involves removing the liquid from plain yogurt and then freezing it, to create an easy-to-carry snack on the go.

Dried Yogurt A Novelty Snack or a Nutritional Risk

This method is similar to the method of making labneh, with the occasional freezing step added instead of just refrigeration, or as the Healthline report described it, a snack inspired by Middle Eastern cuisine.

Dried yogurt benefits

Experts say that dried yogurt is rich in protein, calcium, and probiotics, and is good for gut health.

However, using yogurt sweetened with sugar and flavors can contribute to high blood glucose levels and weight gain.

Experts recommend using plain, unflavored yogurt, and taking into account the portion size to make it a healthy snack.

Preparation and Quality

In the TikTok trend, there are dozens of videos of making it, showing its benefits, and ways to present it in an attractive and different way every time.

Influencers used a paper towel to put the yogurt in it, press it, and refrigerate the mixture for 48 hours.

Katherine Gervasio, a nutritionist, says: “I’m not surprised by the popularity of dry yogurt, as it is easy to pack and carry, making it ideal for snacking on the go, especially when stored correctly.”

Gervasio points out that the nutritional quality of dry yogurt depends largely on how it is prepared, and the type of milk used.

Emma Shafqat, a pediatric nutritionist, recommends giving it to children “because it can contribute to gut health by supporting the balance of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system, enhancing immune function, and improving overall gut health.”
