It added: "The soldiers are fully equipped to defend the area in coordination with local security forces."
According to the army, there are three divisions inside Gaza working to "dismantle the terrorist infrastructure and weaken Hamas' capabilities."
The statement also quoted the commander of the Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, as confirming that "the Southern Command remains on high alert and preparedness for the coming days."
A war of extermination in Gaza
Since then, Israel has been carrying out a violent aggression and a war of extermination that has resulted in the deaths of 41,870 people, most of them civilians, according to the latest figures issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The war in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,205 people on the Israeli side, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. The toll includes hostages killed or killed while being held in the Gaza Strip.
A total of 251 people were kidnapped during the attack, 97 of whom are still being held, including 33 who the army says have been killed.
