Manchester United player: Fans' comments destroyed me
Because of his frequent injuries on the pitch
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones revealed that he was psychologically traumatized by the criticism he received for his frequent injuries, indicating that he did not like going to the club as he felt ashamed of his colleagues.
Jones spent 12 years with United before announcing his retirement from football and starting to take training courses.
Fear of getting injured
Jones told the BBC: It got so bad for a while that I would walk down the street and worry about what people would say to me if I got another injury, and I would think about what I would say next.
He added: I just wanted to keep my head down when I was in public, and it was the same on social media, if you know me you will know that all I want to do is play football, but people think that I just wake up every morning and decide to get injured.
I feel ashamed
Jones added: “I was so ashamed of my injury that I didn’t even want to talk to my teammates, and I was embarrassed to go to the club every day just to get treatment.”
Jones made 229 appearances for United, winning the Premier League title in the 2012-13 season during Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge, as well as the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.
