The effect of neurodermatitis on the eye and vision

Doctors explain that neurodermatitis affects the eye and causes what is known as atopic keratoconjunctivitis, according to the German Society for Dermatology.

Symptoms of the disease

The society explained that atopic keratoconjunctivitis can be detected by observing the following symptoms on the eyelids:

- The appearance of additional wrinkles on the lower eyelids, usually under both eyes

- Eczema that is not clearly defined and is usually itchy around the eyes, and is often accompanied by swelling of the eyelids

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis can also be detected by observing the following symptoms on the eyes:

- Itching

- Burning

- Redness and swelling of the conjunctiva

- Watery secretions, then sticky and mucous, especially in the morning

- Keratitis

Other symptoms include sensitivity to sunlight, smoke, heat and cold.

A doctor should be consulted immediately upon noticing these symptoms to undergo timely treatment in order to avoid the serious consequences that may result from atopic keratoconjunctivitis, represented by keratoconus (the cornea becomes thin and curved) and retinal detachment.

Treatment methods

Severe eczema on the eyelids is treated with ointments containing anti-inflammatory substances such as cortisone.

In the case of a bacterial infection, ointments containing antibiotics are used.

It is important to clean the eyelids well twice a day to remove dirt, secretions and crusts.

The patient should also protect his eyes as much as possible from irritants such as preservatives, dyes and perfumes, which are found in cosmetics, eye creams, shampoos and facial cleansing products.

It is also necessary to avoid wearing contact lenses and wear glasses instead.

Since neurodermatitis causes the skin around the eye to dry out quickly, a moisturizing eye cream should be used, taking into account that it is free of irritants such as perfumes, dyes and preservatives.
