Medvedev: We will do everything to eliminate Ukraine or NATO!
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on the expression "irreversible" in the final statement of the NATO summit in Washington regarding Ukraine's path to joining the alliance.
This came in a post by Medvedev on his official channel on the Telegram application, where he literally transferred (in English) the paragraph of the final statement of the NATO summit, which states that the alliance countries "will continue to support Ukraine on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership." He then translated it into Russian.
According to what was reported by the Russian media, Medvedev continued by saying: "The conclusion has become clear. We must now do everything in our power so that (Ukraine's irreversible path) to NATO ends either with the disappearance of Ukraine or with the disappearance of the alliance, and it is better with both."
This comes as Russia is studying "measures" to contain the "serious threat" posed by NATO, Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying on Thursday.
Peskov added that NATO, which concludes its summit in Washington on Thursday, is now "fully involved in the conflict in Ukraine."
He continued: "We are forced to analyze the decisions taken (at the Washington summit on Wednesday) and the discussions that took place, and to carefully analyze the text of the declaration that was adopted."
He added: "This is a very serious threat to national security that will force us to take deliberate, coordinated and effective measures to contain NATO," without providing details on when they will be implemented or their nature.
Peskov stressed: "We note that our opponents in Europe and the United States are not supporters of dialogue. Judging by the documents adopted at the NATO summit, they are not supporters of peace."
He continued: "This alliance is a tool for confrontation, not peace and security."
On Wednesday, NATO reinforced its support for Ukraine with military and financial commitments, and declared that Ukraine was on an “irreversible path” toward NATO membership. “From the very beginning, we said that NATO’s expansion to Ukraine was an unacceptable threat to us,” Peskov said. “We see that NATO is adopting a document stating that Ukraine will definitely join NATO.”
