Fatal fall ends life of Norwegian cyclist
The organizers of the Tour of Austria announced the death of Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege, who succumbed to injuries he sustained when he fell during a downhill race in the penultimate stage of this stage.
Local media quoted the organizers of the race as saying that Drege (25 years old), a rider for the "Cup-Repsol" team, fell in a slope and his injuries were fatal.
The International Cycling Union wrote on the "X" platform: "The International Cycling Union is shocked to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege in the Tour of Austria. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team-mates."
The "Cup Repsol" team said in a statement issued on its website: "We are shocked by the tragic passing of Andre Drege, on Saturday, July 6, after a very serious accident during the descent during the fourth stage of the Tour of Austria. Andre lost his life in the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre's family and loved ones during this very difficult time."
The podium ceremony for Saturday's stage has been cancelled, and a decision will be made on whether Sunday's final stage will take place.
