Four American teachers stabbed in China

The four teachers from Cornell College, a private liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa, were injured in a “serious incident” during a daytime visit to a public park in the northeastern Chinese city of Jilin, the school’s director, Jonathan Brand, said in a statement.

A video circulating on social media showed people lying on the ground covered in blood in Bishan Park.

As of noon local time Tuesday, there was no word on the incident from Chinese authorities.

The attack came as the United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, are working to boost exchanges as part of a broader push to improve bilateral relations.

The number of Americans studying in China has fallen sharply over the past decade.

There are currently about 300,000 Chinese students in the United States, while there are fewer than 900 American students in China.
