Turkey's plane angers Germans at Euro 2024
The arrival of the Turkish national team participating in the European Cup "Euro 2024" has sparked anger in the city of Hamburg after it took a plane to travel only 150 kilometers between its camp and the stadium for Wednesday's match against the Czech Republic.
Turkey plays the Czech Republic in Group 6, which is led by Portugal, and needs a point to qualify for the second round.
The Turkish team traveled from Hanover, where they are staying, to Hamburg, which will host Wednesday's match, by hiring a private plane to travel the 150 kilometers. This angered Werner Reh, head of transportation at the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation, who described the trip as "completely unnecessary", seeking explanations for why the Red team officials chose the plane instead of the train, as he says that "the carbon dioxide balance is 10 to 20 times worse than a train trip."
"This trip is absolutely unacceptable," said Rene Schwarz, spokesman for the citizens' initiative to ease air traffic in Hamburg. "In our city you are not even allowed to drive an electric car to the stadium so that fans can use public transport." He continued: "There is a no-car zone around the stadium. That is precisely why it is ridiculous that the Turkish team travelled by plane to the match."
