Xavi attacks Guardiola
Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez accused his friend and former colleague Pep Guardiola, the current Manchester City coach, of being the reason behind the former's dismissal, while the latter responded by saying that he left the club more than 10 years ago and did not know what was going on.
Xavi resigned from his position at the beginning of this year and reversed his resignation last April, but he was dismissed from his position late last month and German Hansi Flick was appointed as Barcelona's coach for the next two seasons.
Cadena Ser radio revealed on Monday that Xavi and his entourage believe that Pep Guardiola was hoping that the former would fail in his mission, and that he was behind the dismissal of his former colleague from his position.
Guardiola played with Xavi in the nineties and the beginning of this century, before Pep took over the training of his former colleague between 2008-2012 to be with another group of stars "the best Barcelona in history".
Guardiola responded to the accusations on Monday, saying: “I have been away from the club for more than 10 years, and I don’t know anything about this matter, what happened with Xavi is not my fault, I have nothing to do with it.”
Guardiola had previously said after Xavi’s dismissal in late May: “When a coach is fired, it means something didn’t work, I don’t have an opinion now, and I don’t know what happened, maybe when I talk to people at Barcelona I will know something, this just shows that coaches are under pressure, you have to win or you lose your job.”
Xavi achieved 90 wins, 23 draws and 29 defeats with the team in 142 matches between November 2021 and May 2024, while Guardiola won 14 titles with Barcelona in his four seasons with the team.
