The Malawi government announced on Monday that a military plane carrying Chilima had been lost after it disappeared from radar.

The government said in a statement that "all efforts made by aviation authorities to contact the plane since it went out of radar range have so far failed," according to Agence France-Presse.

The plane, which took off after 9:00 am local time (7:00 am GMT), was carrying Chilima, 51, and 9 others.

Chakwera had ordered regional and national forces to conduct an "immediate search and rescue operation to locate the plane," according to the statement.

Chakwera canceled a scheduled working visit to the Bahamas.

In 2022, Chilima was stripped of his powers after he was arrested and charged with graft in a bribery scandal involving a British-Malay businessman. Last month, Malawi's judiciary dropped the charges after Chilima appeared in court for several hearings.
