Xylitol.. Artificial sugar that threatens the heart

Some people are trying some new foods, including the artificial sugar xylitol, which a recent study has proven to be dangerous to the heart.

In detail, a new study warned that increasing the amounts of the artificial sweetener "xylitol" may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

But high levels of this sweetener in the blood are associated with an increased risk of a heart attack, stroke, or any other cardiac event, within 3 years, according to "Health Day".

The study was conducted at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, and researchers analyzed more than 3,000 patients in the United States and Europe.

The researchers also discovered in the laboratory that xylitol causes platelets to clot, which increases the risk of blood clots.

The researchers found that a third of patients with the highest levels of xylitol in their bloodstream were more likely to suffer a cardiovascular event.

Furthermore, all measures of a person’s ability to clot increased immediately after the test subject consumed a drink sweetened with xylitol.

“This study once again highlights the urgent need to investigate sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, especially as they continue to be recommended for conditions such as obesity or diabetes,” said lead researcher Dr. Stanley Hazen.

“This is not to say that you should throw away your toothpaste if it contains xylitol, but we should be aware that consuming a product with high levels can increase your risk of blood clot-related events,” Hazen added.
