The research team from the University of California followed 526 people with an average age of 40 years, and the follow-up lasted for 11 years, during which the participants wore a tracking device on the wrist, to monitor the timing and number of hours of sleep, and the rate of movement that interrupts sleep.

The most important results of the study

The researchers found that 49% of the participants had some degree of sleep disorders, and they were divided into 4 groups according to the severity of the disorder.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, it was found that those who had the highest rate of sleep disorders had greater decline in cognitive tests after 10 years.

The danger of fragmented sleep

The results warned of the dangers of “sleep fragmentation” on cognitive abilities and memory health, as it was found to accelerate memory deterioration by a factor of two.

The research indicated that the depth and lack of disturbance of sleep plays a more important role than the number of hours in maintaining memory health.
