Tips for driving safely in tunnels
Driving cars in tunnels requires some special skills, which may not be the case on regular roads.
Correct breathing technique
German ADAC Automobile Club experts explained that car drivers who suffer from driving problems in tunnels should try to relax through the correct breathing technique.
Once inside the tunnel, you should note the emergency exits and emergency call stations, while monitoring traffic via radio and paying attention to information and instructions, which may be painted on columns and walls, or broadcast via loudspeakers and display screens.
Low beam operation
In order to pass the tunnel safely, you must turn on your low beams, take off sunglasses, and avoid overtaking maneuvers as much as possible, especially if the road is two-way, in addition to adhering to traffic instructions and signals before and during passing through the tunnel, as they may change.
Care should be taken to move to the emergency lane if the car appears to have any malfunction, even if it is minor, and it is preferable to exit the tunnel. If smoke is emitted from the car, the car must be stopped at the far right and the engine should be turned off immediately, then emergency services should be called.
When traffic congestion appears in the tunnel, one must adhere to the traffic lane, which is formed for emergencies, while activating warning lights and adhering to a safety distance of 5 meters from the vehicle in front. When stopping completely, stop the engine and remain in the car.
Another car fire...what should I do?
If another car catches fire, you should maintain a large distance from it, warn others with warning signs, and leave the tunnel as quickly as possible through the next emergency exit.
In principle, driving in tunnels should be avoided if the car driver's condition develops into sweating, shortness of breath, and a feeling of panic.
