The US House of Representatives elected Republican Representative Mike Johnson as its Speaker, after three previous attempts to choose a Speaker failed.

Johnson received 220 votes, ahead of Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the Democratic minority, who received 209 votes.

Johnson was nominated for the position by Republican Party members in the House of Representatives last night after a number of representatives failed to secure the votes necessary to win the position.

On October 3, members of the US House of Representatives voted to remove former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, for the first time in the history of the United States, where a majority of 216 representatives voted in favor of dismissing McCarthy, compared to 210 representatives who rejected the dismissal.

The process of withdrawing confidence from McCarthy came against the backdrop of his ability to narrowly avoid a partial government shutdown, by passing a bill that had the support of a larger number of Democrats than Republicans. McCarthy aroused the ire of the extreme right wing of his party when he cooperated with the Democrats to pass a temporary agreement on the budget to avoid a shutdown. governmental.

The presidency of the US House of Representatives is the third most important position in the American political system after the positions of president and vice president, and Republicans control the House of Representatives with a simple majority of 221 votes compared to 212 votes for the Democrats.
