Sweden expels an Iraqi who burned copies of the Qur’an
TV4 television confirmed on Thursday that the Swedish Migration Agency expelled an Iraqi who burned copies of the Holy Quran in the past few months in the capital, Stockholm.
The television quoted the agency as saying, “The Immigration Agency decided to expel the person from Sweden... and as a result of the complications in implementing the decision, it granted him a limited residence permit for the period from October 25, 2023 to April 16, 2024.”
The Swedish Migration Agency said in July that it would re-examine the man's residence permit.
In August, Sweden raised its terrorism alert to the second highest level, and warned of increased threats against Swedes at home and abroad after burning copies of the Qur’an sparked Muslim anger and threats from extremist groups.
People burned several copies of the Qur’an in Sweden and Denmark, which are two of the most liberal countries in the world and allow criticism of religion in the name of freedom of expression.
Last week, a Tunisian gunman killed two Swedish football fans in Brussels in an attack that the Swedish Prime Minister said showed that Europe must strengthen security to protect itself.
