Drinking tea and coffee gives you strength in old age
A new study has revealed that drinking a cup of tea or coffee daily in middle age can keep you stronger into old age, as it is linked to a lower likelihood of developing physical weakness as you age.
According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, the study was conducted by a team from the National University of Singapore, and included 12,000 participants, aged between 45 and 74 years, who were followed for 20 years.
Participants were first interviewed in middle age, when their average age was 53, and were asked about their drinking habits for caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and foods such as chocolate.
After the participants reached the age of 73, they were asked some questions, including questions about their weight and how active they felt. They were also examined for their hand grip strength and the time it took to complete a test to stand and walk to a specific destination.
The researchers said that there are several factors that show a person suffering from physical weakness with age, the most important of which are severe weight loss, fatigue, slowness, and muscle weakness.
The researchers indicated that 84 percent of the participants reported constantly drinking coffee, while 12 percent of them reported drinking tea.
