An American senator was arrested in Hong Kong

On Tuesday, government media in Hong Kong announced the arrest of a US senator on charges of possessing an unregistered weapon, a major crime in the city, which is considered one of the most stringent gun control laws in the world.

Hong Kong's state radio and television reported that Jeff Wilson, a Republican senator from Washington, was arrested on Saturday at the airport after a gun was found in his bag.

Wilson appeared in a local court yesterday, Monday, and was only released after paying bail of $2,557 (20,000 Hong Kong dollars), according to the Hong Kong Free Press.

In addition to posting bail, Wilson's travel documents were seized, and he was ordered to remain in Hong Kong for his next court hearing, on October 30.

The MP explained that he was visiting the city with his wife as part of a five-week vacation in Southeast Asia, and he did not realize the presence of the gun until after boarding the plane. “It was an honest mistake, and I expect the case to be solved soon,” Wilson said, claiming that the gun was registered, but in Washington.
