A new and shocking decision from WhatsApp
The messaging platform WhatsApp revealed some bad news for anyone still using an old Android phone, as the WhatsApp application confirmed that it blocks access to certain devices, and this means that owners will now need to purchase new devices to continue using the application that is very popular.
According to the British Mirror website, the changes will take effect as of today, October 24, and target any device that cannot upgrade to one of the latest Android upgrades introduced by Google.
Confirming the news, WhatsApp said: “As of October 24, 2023, only version 5.0 of the Android operating system and later will be supported,” meaning that older versions will not support the application.
The company justified this step by saying: “To keep pace with the latest developments in technology, we routinely stop supporting older operating systems to direct our resources to supporting the latest systems. If we stop supporting your operating system, you will be notified and reminded several times to upgrade your device to continue using WhatsApp.”
You can check which version of Android you're using by heading to Settings > About phone > Check for system updates, and as long as this shows you have something newer than Android 5, you should be safe to continue using WhatsApp.
It is not strange for WhatsApp to get rid of old operating systems, and in fact, this update occurs almost every year, and the last big change occurred on December 31, 2022 with the application ending support for 49 different models of smartphones.
These include the Archos 53 Platinum, Grand S Flex ZTE, HTC Desire 500, Huawei Ascend D, D1, D2, Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, Core, S2, S3 mini and many more.
